About JASWY

The mission of the Japan-America Society of Wyoming is to promote understanding and friendship between the people of Wyoming and Japan through cultural, social, educational and professional interaction.

The Japan-America Society of Wyoming (JASWY) was founded by ten residents of Laramie, Wyoming and officially incorporated on December 19, 2005. It was the consensus of the founding members that forming such a non-profit organization was necessary to enhance friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between the people of Japan and Wyoming.

They strongly believe from personal experience that interacting with a US ally like Japan that has a very different culture, tradition and high technology will be very beneficial to the people of Wyoming in many different ways. The founding members also felt that it was desirable to create an environment which will be conducive to further economic growth in the state as well as to broaden the global vision of Wyoming's population.

The Japan-America Society of Wyoming is so named as it plans to affiliate with the National Association of Japan America Societies (NAJAS) as soon as all relevant requirements set by NAJAS are met. Many other states have such an organization.

JASWY will try to strengthen Wyoming's relationship (both cultural and business) with Japan at the local level as well as the state level. We hope to establish a Sister-State agreement between the State of Wyoming and a yet-to-be-determined Prefecture in Japan with JASWY as the official conduit for cultural exchange initiatives in the near future. The state has already moved toward promoting greater understanding of Japanese culture. In 2004, the Governor Dave Freudenthal set September 25 as Japan Arts Day, which will be celebrated again on September 23 (Sat) in 2006 in Casper.
